Silas Mobley was born May 2, 1837, in Belmont County, Ohio. His parents were natives, respectively, of Maryland and Pennsylvania, but were married in Ohio, where they reared a family of three daughters and one son. When fourteen years of age, Silas accompanied his parents to Virginia, where his father died. The mother then returned to Ohio, where she died the following year. Two of the daughters were then married, one having died March 2, 1848, and Silas, who was the youngest child, was practically left alone. June 14, 1855, he married Rebecca, daughter of Ebenezer Buchanan, by whom one daughter and two sons were born: Sarah, born October 2, 1856, died Dec. 4, 1894 (Md. William Bloam); William, born July 6, 1859, died June 19, 1939 (md. Susan Bloam); and James, born May 31, 1862, died Aug. 16, 1919, md. Mary Snyder. In 1865, Mr. Mobley emigrated to Mercer County, Mo., from Ohio. He loaded all of his personal belongings; including his household goods, machinery, livestock and family on a flat boat, which floated down the Ohio River to the confluence of the Ohio River and the Mississippi River to Davenport. They then transferred to a box car on the railroad which took them to the end of the line near Otumwa, Iowa. Then they drove by wagon to Mercer County, Missouri. Six more children were born in Mercer County: Mary J. born Jan. 26, 1865, died April 9, 1865; Margaret, born June 18, 1866, died April 10, 1893 (md John Manchester); John, born Aug. 21, 1869, died Nov. 13, 1937, md Lecy Faulkner; Roseta, born May 23, 1872, died Oct. 11, 1872; Ruth, born May 3, 1874, died Sept. 8, 1876. On Dec. 18, 1878, Mrs. Mobley died leaving an infant, Ida Rebecca, just born, who died Aug. 16, 1879. May 1, 1879, Mr. Mobley married Urah M. Finch, by whom one daughter, Amy was born Nov. 29, 1882, and who died June 20, 1885. Mr. Mobley died Jan. 29, 1915.
