born about 1612 in Hertfordshire, England, died 13 September 1689; emigrated to America before 1640 and married about 1642 to Rebecca Olmstead. Thomas Newell was an early settler of Hartford, and an original settler of Farmington in 1640. Rebecca Olmstead was a niece of James Olmstead, with whom she came from England in the Lyon.

Thomas Newell was the first of the name to settle in Farmington, whether he came from, enter the settlement Hartford, in its early settlement it is set from Hertfordshire England. At what time he came to this country is unknown. He married Rebecc/Rebeckaha Olmstead, niece of John and Richard, and sister of the first James of Hartford (see Savage), with whom she came over to Boston in September 16 1632, six years after the settlement of Connecticut by the English. Thomas appears in Farmington among the original settlers not long after 1640.
In church records he's enrolled as a member by February 7, 1653 and his wife so I 12th 1763 July. 1669 he appears to frame in 1672 he's I'm almost at 84 proprietors in 1673 he one of the preliminary community who went to Humana talk know Waterbury as a place for new settlement see history of Waterbury the same year he was one of the petitioners liberty of planting the same. Subsequently he signed the articles taking the place of Samuel grizzly, but declined joining the settlements. Thomas died September 13 1609, leaving in a state of 700 pounds. His wife died the 24th 1688. She was remembered in the legacies of Dr. John Olmstead's widow, who was left Buffy bequeathing 50 pounds to the poor. His house was just at the north part of the Village, print the Main Street, showing much taste and selection of the building spot. Tradition says an Indian fort was located in the back of it.

Hartford, November 8 1689
"Whereas, Thomas Newell, of Farmington, recently deceased, died without will, mutually agreed between Watson Thomas and children that were present at the county court distribution of said estate was made, viz.:
“ The oldest son, John Newll, Samuel Newell, John Stanley, John North, that married two of the daughters Hester and Hannah; that waht each child and family received of the father Thomas shall be reckoned and accounted as part of their portion, and with waht the eldest son, John, had already received he is to have a double portion of all the land of his deceased father of all sorts and kind whatsoever, and after the widows thirds are taken out all the personal movable effects, then the aforesaid oldest son, John, agreed to take up with a single or equal proportion of the personal estate his younger brothers and sisters; all of which the above written the eldest son, John, doth fully accept as his full portion out of his deceased father's estate, relinquishing any further claim or right he may hath on his deceased father's estate, out of his natural love and affection unto his other brothers and sisters.
“Further, widow and relict of the said Thomas Newell preserve with the full disposal of her third of all the movable estate for her own maintenance. It is also agreed by the window and children that Rebecca Woodford, grand child of Mr. Thomas, that have lived several years with her grandfather and mother, should have 10 pounds in total estate given her out of her grandfather's estate before any other distribution is made.
“Also it is mutually agreed by the sons of the said Thomas Newell that they possess all the land of their father on these conditions, that they do pay their sisters so much current money, for that part of their portion; that is to say, after that value. If the movable estate will not pay their portion that is to say, after the value of the land is appraised at they are to redeem in country pay. Lastly, we have given to the worshipful court the several sums that each of the children have already received, as near as we can, instructing them to make equal distribution of the forementioned estate, according to our agreement, and to which we have set our hands and seals this eighth of November 1600 89 signed and sealed in the presence of
