Deserted on 20 September 1862 in Gravel Pit, OH *Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers 1861-65, (MI Roster) Published in 1903. Wallace Rosa's military record from the NARA. The very short of it is: Wallis Rosa, Pvt. Co. I, 19th Reg't Michigan Infantry, age 34 years. Joined for duty and enrolled Aug. 15, 1862 at St. Joseph for a period of three years and was paid $25.00. Company muster in roll was Sept. 5 1862. He deserted Sept. 26, 1862 from camp at Gravel Pit, Ohio He re-enlisted: April 22 1863 under the name Benjamin Freeman, age 36, in Co. F, 1 Reg't Michigan Sharpshooters. According to pension records filed by his wife Sophia he was taken prisoner on the 17th day of June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. He was admitted to the Hospital on October 20, 1864 and died on the 26th of Scorbitus [scurvy]. He is buried under the name Benjamin Freeman, in Cemetery #11500 in Andersonville, Georgia. There is a notation on his military record dated April 22 1892 regarding his desertion and reenlistment. I don't know when the military was aware that these two men were the same; during the war or not until after when Sophia his widow applied for a widow's pension. Wallace’s pension records comfirm that Abram Rosa was his brother and Daniel Cross was Wallace’s nephew. A note in pension record states: Regiment was in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia from Jun 10 1864-Apr 3 1865. Wallace died at Libby Prison, Virginia (then corrects itself to Andersonville, Georgia) of starvation. --------------------- Andersonville, Georgia soldiers buried: Freeman, Benjamin 1st Sharpshooters, Company F #11500, Andersonville, GA [1] | |
