    Celebrates 93rd Birthday
The children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives of E. S. Shepard, of South Parkersburg, yesterday helped him celebrate his ninety-third birthday with a picnic, games and singing at City park. Among those attending the gathering were Mr. Shepard’s only living brother, James Shepard, and his only living sister-in-law, Sarah Cooper.

Approximately 125 persons were present, including Mr. Shepard’s ten grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Present were Mrs. W. M. Stukey and family, the family of the late Margaret Stukey, the family of the late T. W. Shepard (all of McKeesport, Pa.), I. B. Shepard and family , Mr. and Mrs. C. H. E. S. Shepard was born and has spent his entire life in Wood and adjoining counties. Still in possession of all of his mental faculties, he jokingly tells his friends, “I’m not 93 years old. I’m 93 years young.” - newspaper clipping from unknown paper, with unknown date; in the possession of Jennifer Bumann, N1811 Maple Terrace, Greenville, WI 54942 920-757-6813, his great-grandaughter.

[NOTE: if he is celebrating his 93rd birthday then his birth year is not 1844. He died in 1935.]

    According to family notes:
His mother would hide him in a secluded cave during the civil war as squads of Yankee recruiters would come through the area, looking for young lads that could be impressed into the service.
He married Jane Buchanan probably after the war, and acquired about 500 acres on and about Gates’ Ridge, about 25 miles south of Parkersburg, West Virginia. When they went to housekeeping, their main possession was a large copper kettle; and the neighbors came from miles around and held what they called a “house-raising” over a weekend and they started from there. They had a large family and were an integral part of a community of farmers in that area. As a matter of fact, most of the families in that area at that time were inter-related as cousins, second cousins, etc. There are many “Shepards” living there today with various spellings of the name.

Elza Shepard related (at age 88-93) experiences about him and his father during the Civil War, on steam ships (supporting the war effort) up and down the Ohio River. Both of them were experienced in operating steam machinery. Hartley, Elza and his brothers assisted in operating steam engines for sawmills, threshing machines etc. during their youth.

    Birth:

    Notes:

Notes from a letter to Sally from Zara and Brooks,

    Regarding Grandmother Jane Shepard:
...as you go south from Parkersburg on “old” Route 2, you go up what is called “Limestone Hill”. There is a church to the left, as you reach the top of the hill. To the right is a junction with a dirt road, called Gate’s Ridge Road. It is one lane and, if the weather is dry, is passable. Winding about three miles on this road, you come to a church on the left. The church-yard also serves as a cemetery. Here lie the remains of Elza, Jane and several of their children, as well as many friends and relatives. Where the church sets is the junction of another road coming from the left. Down this road about a mile or so (setting on a rise of the hill) is the old farm. It appears that the old barn may still be there; but obviously the house with its electric wiring and modern siding must be a replacement. Grandmother died in about 1925, I guess. I recall being taken on a long journey during the winter from Verasailles Avenue to Parkersburg, and being presented to Grandmother lying on a bed; she knew me but I not her. (She had cared for me as an infant at the farm). Brother Bud told the story of being chased, as a small boy, by a large Tom turkey in the yard of the farmhouse, it appearing that the bird was about to catch him; but as he ran screaming from the bird (which stood higher than he) it passed the front porch step, where stood grandmother, who had run from the kitchen to see what the commotion was all about. She made a fast grab for the turkey, and seized it by the neck and started to shake it. After a vigorous shaking the turkey suddenly went limp, and Bud, in complete amazement watched her wheel about and carry the bird into the house. They had turkey for dinner that evening!! When granmother cared for me as an infant at the farm, it was the winter of 1917-18 when a terrible flu epidemic swept the nation. There were deaths in the family at that time at the farm, so I understand. Some time after her death, grandad moved into Parkersburg to stay with Uncle Hod, where I visited with him overnight in the 1930’s. He had a large picture of her by his bed, and he would look at it and say “she was a good woman.”

    Notes:

Hartley Shepard and his family moved to West Virginia between 1852 and 1854 from Ohio.
    ————————

Said to have come to America in the 1850’s-60’s, from Insch, Scotland. [DIDN’T-was born in OHIO in ~1823]

According to a letter from William A. Shepard to Jennifer Denise [John] Bumann:
    1. ...grandfather told me when I was about 8-12 years old - 60 or more years ago. He was then in his late 80’s and early 90’s - and he didn’t have much going for him then! He told many stories about his father training him to run steam engines and machinery and how he [great grandfather to William] - had acquired the skill in Scotland - I presume just after the steam engine was invented and developed there.

    2. Great Grandfather Shepard came to the U.S. about 1850 - 1860? and settled near Parkersburg, West Virginia - where grandfather grew up and married Jane Buchanan - (a scottish lass)... [Jennifer’s notes: No--according to the 1870 census record Hartley was born in Ohio about 1823]

    3. Hartley came to US from England at age 3. Died at the age of 99, when the family lived in Wellsville, OH. Three brothers came with father and mother, one brother stayed in Baltimore rest of the family went to St. Clairsville, OH. (1803-1806)...[Jennifer’s notes: NO--Hartley didn’t come to America he was born in OHIO. His father, was born in Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts - THIS FAMILY IS DESCENDED FROM WILLIAM SHEPARD OF CT AND MA who married Experience Hart and was divorced in 1600s. Most of our Shepard clan can be found in Westfield until they moved to Marietta, Ohio after the Revolutionary War.]

    The following is incorrect:
Hartley’s father (first name unknown) came to US with 3 sons, wife (deceased in about 1805) landing in Baltimore, MD. Hartley and one brother traveled on to St. Clairsville, OH leaving one brother in Baltimore...

This could be true - don’t know:
...Sometime after 1805 Hartley [he was born ~1823] moved north to Salem Twp, Monroe Co., OH where he met and married Susanna Smith (approx. 1840), a young widow 12 years his junior. [her age is not correct in this statement and it is doubtful, but not impossible that she was a widow.]

Have no idea if true haven’t found any information on his death, he did die after 1910 as he is in that census with daughter Sevilla Deem:
Hartley died at age 99 in March 4 ? Just 4 months from his birthday on July 4 ? when he would have been 100 years old.

    Could be true:
He like to fox hunt (Note: evidently learned from his father) and the story was told that he won a bet that his fox horn could be heard at a distance of 5 miles. <-FOUND court record regarding fox pelt bounty he received for 5 fox pelts 1855

Have no idea if true haven’t found any information on his death, he did die after 1910 as he is in that census with daughter Sevilla Deem:
    He died in Wellsville Ohio

    Dear Cousin Sally,
You are the only cousin that I have never met, but I always knew about you. I am 75 yrs old and 50% blind hope you will be able to read this. As you know we are are basicly English but we also have some Irish Scotch and Indian blood in us.[NOT] Our grandmother Jane Shepard was part Indian what tribe I don’t know [NO SHE WASN’T, DNA PROVES THIS]. Her maiden name was Buchannan She was related to President Bucannon [NO, WE ARE NOT] about 5 Generations down as I said the Shepards are English the Shepard clan and another clan in England got into a feud. The Shepard clan lost the Battle they killed all the Shepards but let the pregnant women live what is how Shepards got regenerated. [GIBBERISH AND USELESS INFORMATION]
Two Shepard brothers came to the U.S. and got lost from each other in NY city and never found each other again [INCORRECT]. We are decendents of one of them. We never knew their names. There were some Shepards in the mid west. We always thought they were decendents of one of the lost brothers. Some of our uncles were going to try to look them up but gave the idea up as it would cost too much money. Our grandfather Elza Shepard was born in Monroe County, Ohio near Woodsfield, close Wheeling, WVA. He was the son of Hartley Shepard, who moved his family to WVA when our grandfather was 9 yrs. old. Our grandfather ate his first[?] meal in WVA when he was 9 yrs old at an inn just two miles from where I live. I visit our grandparents grave about 3 time a a year. My parents are buried in the same grave yard about half mile from old home place.
Our grandfather had 100 living decendents the day he died so you can see we are a big outfit. He died in 1937 at 97 yrs of age.
A man by the name of McClellan Shepard was a member of the Jessie James gang He was a distant relative of our grandfather. He was killed in a bank robbery at Maysville Kentucky this was handed down to me by word of mouth through the family. I also checked it our in later yrs in a book I found while browsing through a book store so you see we had a bad apple in our clan.
I could write a book on the Shepards, but do to poor eye sight makes if very difficult to do so. Herman Shepard of Safety Harbor Fla. is the oldesT living Shepard past 80 yrs I am second oldest Brooks is third Herman’s brother Bill Jr. of Bath Main is third my sister 4th and you 5th I hope this letter don’t bore you to tears. Any questions write me.
I wish you and your a Merry Xmas and happy new year
    Wayne

    [Postmarked February 5, 1990]
    Dear Sally,
Here is another chapter on the Shepards We will call it a family divided all information here was passed down to me by our uncle Wayne he is the uncle I was named after his nick name was Hod. He said our grandparents had enough money saved up to educate to kids beyond 8th grade. They choose uncle Tom and Aunt Ada. Aunt Ada became a school teacher and Uncle Tom got a good job in the steel mills uncle Isard who ws not chosen married a Lara Caplinger and she alway held it against then because uncle Isard was not chosen Aunt Lara raised her kids apart from the rest of the family a condition that exists yet to this day.
Uncle Isard has grand kids living in our neighborhood that I do not even know Uncle Isard was not the smartest member of the familyi. Poring education on him was like pouring water on a duck that was why uncle tom was chosen instead f him. Our Aunt Lara alwass held that against our grandparents our grandmother raised me from I was 3 ys. old untill she died in 1935 I was 10 yrs old, but that is another story. I have visited your parents in McKeesport with our grandparents I have met all Aunt Lillians kids by her first marriage uncle Tom and Aunt Lillian broughts us home. 3 flat tires between McKeepsort and Parkersbur, We were 18 his making the trip
Uncle Tom was not the best driver in the world he drove down the middle of the road hoolering lay over you SOB do you want it all Uncle Tom never liked to say goodbye one time he was visiting us our on the old home farm when he left he walked out the door went around the house looked through a window thumbed his nose at us and took off.
The day grandmother was buried uncle Toms daughter Virgie was a corps at the same funeral home he attended Virgies funeral in the morning and his mothers in the afternoon! I am sure that was a sad say in his life.
I would love to meet you if you are ever this way stop I could talk to you for hours
My wife Clara and I have lived at this same address for 42 years. We have no children. Our phone no is 4280869
I am a veteran of World War 2. While in the army I was in around 40 states and 11 foreign countries I was in two severe bombing raids in London England was on the Normandy Invasion. St. Lo Break through The Ardennes forest Belguim Bulde and the Elbe River Campiuns and I never got a Scratch. I guess the man up stairs was on my side. I am a Methodist by Christian faith a 32 degree mason a Shriner and a democrat. So I guess that about sizes it up If you are ever this way come in and take your shoes off and sit a spell.

Historical Note Taken From a Letter From William A. Shepard, Jr.:
...When your grandmother and I visited Scotland, we inquired as to our “roots” and were told by a gentleman in Edinborough (a professor at Edinborough University) that the Scottish clans became organized in the 1200 AD - 1400 AD period - and that the Shepard, Shephard, Shepherd group was involved in a very unfortunate alliance and resulting genocide just prior to this time - which resulted in the death of all male Shepards - the surviving female members were absorbed into the groups that made up the other major clans in the 1200AD approximate period. The few male children born of the pregnant female survivors then were the stock that the Shepard family grew from in the next 800+ years...

Notes from William A. Shepard regarding Hartley research:
All vital records from Salem TWP Monroe, Co., OH until 1867 were destroyed in Woodsfield Ohio Courthouse in 1867. So no verification of Hartley’s data could be confirmed.
No records are available concerning Hartley’s father or his brother that remained in Baltimore, or his other brother that accompanied him and his father to St. Chairsville, OH around 1809. Brief search of courthouse records in St. Clairsville showed no entries, however couldn’t find much data circa 1805.

[The above two items are probably false. The Shepards are most likely English not Scottish in origin, see research notes regarding DNA evidence. I believe that Hartley was born in Washington County, Ohio as that is where his likely father Henry was living at the time of his birth, his mother Huldah also died there a few years after he was born. The idea of Monroe County comes from the Buchanan side of the family, because that IS where they came from before they moved to West Virginia, however Hartley could have grown up there having been farmed out as a child to a relative, and he was married to Susanna Smith before they moved to West Virginia whose family was living in Monroe County.]

Confederate rosters, v. 1-20, reel 1-10. Biog./Hist. Note On March 13, 1884, the General Assembly passed an act directing the adjutant general to compile a roster of all those who served from Virginia in the Confederate armed forces. The project did not begin, however, until Congress’ passage of an act in 1903 providing for the assembling of muster rolls for all the Confederate states and Virginia’s subsequent creation of the Office of the Secretary of Virginia Military Records in 1904. The work of the Secretary of Virginia Military Records of assembling muster rolls and other documents related to Virginians in the Civil War was continued by the Department of Confederate Military Records which was formed by an act of the General Assemply on March 12, 1912. Major Robert W. Hunter served as Secretary of Virginia Military Records from 1904 until 1910. Hunter was replaced by Colonel Joseph V. Bidgood who served as Secretary of Virginia Military Records and later Secretary of the Department of Confederate Military Records. In 1918, the General Assembly passed an act abolishing the Department of Confederate Military Records and transferred the department’s records to the Library of Virginia. Notes:

The surname MOBLEY comes from daughter JANE’s death registration. Margaret’s death registration lists parents names as William and Sarah Mabley. Whom are probably William Mobley and Sarah Millison of Ohio; I have a marriage record for those two.

I found an ancestry.com entry [James's Robert Moore updated is name of users tree] indicating that a Sarah Mobley b1856 married a William Bloom, her parents were Silas Mobley and Rebecca Buchanan. Rebecca was a sister to William Buchanan and Silas was a brother to Margaret Mobley. The parents of Silas were listed as William Mobly and Sarah Millison, which confirms for me that my parents for Margaret are correct. Plus I have family photographs, labeled, of Sarah Mobley Bloom and her husband, which also indicates the connection is true.

DNA proves a connection of Joseph to George Smith and Sarah Huffaker of Virginia and even to Tobias, George’s father. The thrulines from Ancestry.com show DNA matches with several descendants of George and Sarah’s children other than Joseph. Also matches with the children of Tobias other than George and descendants of the Huffaker line too.

However there is this entry in George’s biography timeline:

It is most likely that Catherine/Katherine is the daughter of James Atkinson and Margaret Brown. Joseph and Katherine are selling property (see Joseph land notes) that was formerly James Atkinson’s, they received it after his death and are quit claiming their portion of the inheritance to John Adams, who was the administrator of James’ estate. Ebenezer Buckhanon and Kinz Atkinson are also quit claiming the same exact property to John who was executor of James’ will. Ebenezer’s wife is Rebecca Atkinson.
