William Finch Probably First Alamo Settler
Arrived in Kalamazoo County from New York in Spring of 1835
William Finch, who arrived in Kalamazoo County in the spring of 1835 from Niagara County New York, was probably the first settler in Alamo township. He located in what was known for years as the “Finch Settlement” in the extreme northeast portion of the township.

Alamo was organized as a separate township in 1838. It had previously consitituted a part of Cooper Township. Petitioners first selected the name of Bainbridge for the new township, but when it was found that a township, of this name existed in Berrien, the name Alamo was selected in memory of Col. David Crockett and his men who defended the Alamo at San Antonio, Texas, in 183?.

    Settle Alamo Centre
First township officers were elected in 1838 as follows: Jesse W. Turner, supervisor; William Taylor, clerk; Asa Reede, Mahlen Everitt, Jesse W. Turner, Nelson Everitt, Horace Eastman, highway commissioners; Garrett Rosa and Josephus Case, collectors(?); Mahon Everitt, John Johnson and John Coshun assessors; J. W. Turner, William Taylor and John Johnson, school inspectors, Simon Sager, Ephraim Case and William H. Finch, constables.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1800 US Federal Census Coxsackie, Greene County, New York details: Abraham Rose -- Males: -10 (2), 10 -15 (2), 16-25 (1), 26-44 (1); Females: -10 (1), 10-15 (1), 26-44 (1) Not much in the way of dates from pension file: Coxsackie, Greene County when he was called into the service in 1777, from there he moved to Town of Greene, Chenango County & State of New York, (sold land in Town of Greene in 1806, found land deed), from there to Manlius, Onondaga County, New York, from there to Locke in Cayuga County, New York, from there he moved to Homer, Cortland County, New York where he now resides. (died 1844 here) - he is probably the 70-80 year old male living with Rufus Rosa in ‘Not Stated’ (1840 census), Cortland County
    • MILF: Y

    Notes:

The ROOSA book in my library, indicates that Guert/Garritt’s parents are Abraham Roosa and Eleanor Van Loon. Garrett’s death record states parents as Abraham and Delany Rosa/Roosa. The name Eleanor only shows up once in Dutch church records in Coxsackie, otherwise she is always seen as Lena. it appears that a researcher along with the minister’s entry of Eleanor, once, is being used as Lena’s first name. I believe that Eleanor is an error and her name was Lena.

The Roosa book also states that Abraham, who was married to Eleanor[Lena], was also in the Revolutionary war, with death dates for both matching the actual pension record. The actual pension record indicates only two children for this couple: Rufus and Amanda, (living at the time anyway), and the wife’s name was Sarah. Rufus most likely lied in the pension record or stretched the truth regarding the children of Abraham and Lena, because Coxsackie Dutch church records show they had more than two children - the others were either dead or off in another state as in the case of Gerrit who was living in Michigan at the time.

Use of the book is highly tentative because of these many errors. Book not sourced very well either.

Further research into the transcribed online records of the Dutch reformed church records of Coxackie indicate a a more clear possibility of the pension being for the correct Abraham. Abraham’s wife is entered as Lena in many of the baptismal entries for their children, Abraham and Lena have a Guert and Rufus listed in the baptismal records along with an Anna and Abraham.

Married 1783 to first wife [Lena], (according to pension record testimony of son Rufus), they have no children recorded in baptismal records until Guert/Garrett in 1790. A daughter Rachel is said to be their first child, but no record of her has been found so far.

Abraham married VAN LOON, Lena / Helena before 1790 in Greene County, New York. Lena (daughter of VAN LOON, Jurge and VAN LOON, Helena) was born on 2 Feb 1764 in New York; died in 1802. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  VAN LOON, Lena / Helena was born on 2 Feb 1764 in New York (daughter of VAN LOON, Jurge and VAN LOON, Helena); died in 1802.

    Notes:

Named as Delany in death record for Garrett, but his second wife was giving the information.

    Possible parents for Delany/Lena:
1767 August 16 Jurris van Loon and Lena van Loon Lea (child being baptized) sponsors Anthony Winne and Commertje Vosburgh<—there is a tradition of the name Lea in the Clouw family so this could be a sister of Lena, which might be from Helena.

Only entry that comes close to Lena, so don’t know if correct.
    ———————————
Her name is entered as Lena in many of the baptismal entries for their children, Abraham and Lena have a:
    Guert
    Rufus
    Anna
    Abraham
listed in the Coxsackie, Green County, New York - Dutch Reformed Church baptismal records.

    Birth:
possible birth date using Coxsackie Dutch church records; or 1767 - Lea baptismal entry
